Ethiopia has prioritized TB control as one of the major public health programs in its health sector development plan. Ethiopia has a high TB, HIV, and MDR-TB burden, with annual estimates of all forms of TB incidence of 182 cases per 100,000 people, and a 8% HIV co-infection rate among TB patients.

In 2005, a drug resistance survey found an MDR-TB prevalence of 2.7% among new TB patients and 14% among previously treated TB patients. MDR-TB patients are treated in 13 referral and 19 ambulatory sites. For the 557 MDR/RR-TB cases started on second-line treatment in 2014, treatment success rate reached 70%
